Kobern-Gondorf

Four castles and palaces surround the wine-growing region

Anyone visiting Kobern-Gondorf for the first time will be fascinated by the sheer density of historical buildings. Two castles and palaces alone can be found in the relatively tranquil Moselle village. Sights include: The Niederburg castle ruins and the castle keep of the Oberburg rise above the town along with St. Matthew's Chapel, a significant late Romanesque church, the fabulous and elegant Schloss Liebieg and one of the most unusual castle ensembles far and wide: Schloss von der Leyen. Originally created as the Moselle's only river fortress, the former Gondorf Oberburg was later converted into a castle. An abundance of Roman and Celtic history speaks for itself. The towns of Kobern and Gondorf are situated directly on the Moselle, while the Dreckenach district is slightly further away in Maifeld on the Nothbach river.
