Kattenes

Valley of the 13 mills

On this straight stretch along the Moselle lies Kattenes, which is surrounded by forests. A former wine-making village, many popular local winemakers still produce their own wines here to this day. Kattenes achieved nationwide renown in the 1950s and 1960s with its 'Moselfeuer’ herbal liquor that was produced here. In the 1970s, the wine region merged with Löf and is now called Löf-Kattenes. Kattenes, which is also known as the ‘Valley of the 13 mills’, is unique. Numerous historical flour and oil mills with old residential and farm buildings are dotted along a very steep road. After centuries in operation, the last mill finally closed down in the 1930s.
